"The men working under the Government's subsidy scheme are not wage slaves; they are not selling their labour, and any question concerning them is one of status,.not of contract," said Mr. S. Fournier on behalf of a deputation of unemployed workers to the Minister of Labour, the Hon. P. C. Webb, in Christchurch. "It is the first time I have heard you say that such men are not wage slaves," said the Minister. Mr. Fournier claimed that the men were better off under the old No. 5 scheme than under the present subsidy scheme; but after some discussion of the relative advantages'of the schemes the Minister acceded to a request by Mr. Fournier that they should agree to differ.
