TWO BROADCASTS

CANON AND POLICE PUZZLE FOR CHILDREN SYDNEY, Aug. 20. ' Through a mischance, children at the police depot, in Bourke street, yesterday heard simultaneously an address by Canon Hammond about the dangers of the road and a police broadcast concerning a man who had esescaped from custody in Ppmble. "We are living in an age when the motor car is becoming an increasing menace," came from the loud speaker. "Calling all cars. Calling all cars." "Most of you will live to see the day when the ordinary method of travel will be by aeroplane, at speeds of 250 to 300 miles an hour . . ." "A man has escaped from custody at the foot of Yarra street, Pymble . . ." "The whole community is indebted to the police, who arc, as you must now realise, the friends of the community. . ." "The man is aged 29, dressed in a grey suit and brown shoes, and is not wearing a hat. Message complete." Canon Hammond was speaking into a microphone which was placed near the aerial of the police broadcasting station. As he rose to speak the police began broadcasting an urgent message to all patrol cars. The message was picked up by the microphone and amplified in the same way as Canon Hammond's address. The occasion was the presentation of prizes to winners of the essay competitions conducted annually by the police as part of the "Safety First" movement in schools.
