"DEMORALISATION"
MEN ON SUSTENANCE FARMERS CONCERNED "When there is a cry for labour it is a downright shame that single men should be allowed to loaf about in town when farmers are unable to procure labour," said Mr. C. J. Pierce at a meeting of the Waikato sub-pro-vincial executive of the Farmers Union in Hamilton. It was considered that the authorities should be requested to refuse sustenance to able-bodied men when hard-pressed farmers were unable to obtain labour. The following motion was carried: "That this union views with apprehension the situation created by the drift of able-bodied men into a state of contentment with sustenance conditions. We regard the present situation as leading to a permanent demoralisation of these men. In view of their future status in life, such a state of affairs constitutes a gravemenace to the future of the country. We therefore urge that sustenance be withheld from men physically and mentally able to do work."
