PATUTAHI NEWS

ST. GEORGE'S CHURCH PARISHIONERS MEET (Humid Correspondent.) The annual meeting of the parishioners of the parochial district of Patutahi was held in the parish church on Thursday afternoon, when there was a fair attendance. The vicar presented a report reviewing the past year, making reference to the visit of the Church Army caravan to the sparsely-settled country between here and Wairoa, and to the work being carried on in the public works camps. He said that this latter work was beyond praise. The officers in this work travelled on foot 40 or 50 miles a week, and on Sundays alone some 20 miles. Their work was appreciated by the men, who had respect for the Christian standard they upheld. The caravan work had shown that the church had an interest in those scattered parts where it was impossible to hold ordinary seiwices. During the year the vestry had undertaken the much-needed enlargement and improvement of "The Vicarage." This had cost over £3OO, and had been carried out by Messrs. Skeet and Company. The vicar congratulated the parish on the fine spirit which had been shown in this work. With the exception of a loan of £IOO from the diocese, the whole of the money had been subscribed. The church finances were in a very healthy state. After paying all debts except the diocesan loan the year ended with a credit balance of £l2B. The mission quota and the diocesan quota, it was believed, also had been fully met. Mr. C. H. Williams and Mr. R. Sherratt were re-elected churchwardens, and the retiring vestry also were reelected. Mr. H. C. Williams was reelected synodsman. Mr. J. J. East, who for the past eight years had acted as secretary, intimated that he desired to be relieved of his duties. His resignation was accepted with regret and thanks expressed for his faithful services, to which various persons bore witness. At the conclusion of the meeting the vicar thanked all who had been instrumental in any way in bringing about the success that had marked the year's work in the parish.
