INTERNATIONAL TRADE

LOWERING OF BARRIERS POLICY OF BRITAIN CAPETOWN, Aug. 7. The Cape Argus, quoting from an authoritative source, states: "The Imperial Conference decided that the economic ring of the Empire should be discarded in favour of freer international trade. British efforts for an agreement with America are certain to result in a modification of the Ottawa Agreement, necessitating sacrifices from the Dominions, which South Africa will make. "The Ottawa Agreement will be replaced with bilateral agreements." AMERICAN TARIFFS AUSTRALIA PENALISED WASHINGTON, Aug. 7. Australian and German products are the most frequently penalised by the countervailing duties, according to a Treasury announcement, which shows that the products of nine nations are subjected to this impost. It is pointed out that the duties are necessary owing to the efforts of foreign nations toward economic sufficiency.
