GAINING MOMENTUM
STATE HOUSING SCHEME WORK IN SIX CENTRES PLANS FOR EXTENSION (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. “The State housing scheme is starting to gain momentum,” remarked Mr. J. A. Lee, the under-secretary in charge, in announcing that 1200 workers were now directly employed on the schemes in six centres. He said that this did not include the associated workers making tiles and stoves and milling timber, or the clerical stall's of the building firms and it was estimated that for every man actually on the building work, another was employed elsewhere in connection with the same job. “We are about to start building at Invercargill, Oamaru, Timaru and Thames, and will shortly be building at New Plymouth, Mastcrton, Hastings and Westport, while the commencement is not far away in Greymouth, Nelson, Blenheim, Rangiora, Levin, Napier, Hamilton, Whangarei, Gisborne and Hawera, and a number of other places,” said Mr. Lee. "In most cases, tenders have been called. A large amount of money has been made available, so in all probability there will be some hundreds of other houses planned of which we have no direct record.”
