AMERICA’S CUP FINAL RANGER’S FOURTH WIN THREE MINUTES AHEAD BID BY ENDEAVOUR H (Eloc. Tol. Copyright —United Frees Assn.) (Reed. Aug. G, 3 p.m.) NEW YORK, Aug. 5. Despite crossing the starling line ahead ot time and being compelled to cross again, the British yacht Endeavour il made the best race of the series for the America's Cup when she was beaten to-day for the fourth time by the defender Ranger, which tints held tiic trophy for the United States. Ranger assumed a lead of 20!) yards before Endeavour II could rectity the error. The American boat increased the lead to three-quarters of a mile before the first turning, but Endeavour II made up 30 seconds on the second leg in which she outraeed Ranger and seemed to be overhauling tin* American on the third leg in a 15-mile southwest wind, but Ranger was too far ahead, finishing a quarter of a mile in the lead and establishing a new record for the rectangular course. Ranger won by 3min. 27sec. Her elapsed time was 3 hours 7min. 49sec.. eclipsing by Imin. 12see. the record ol Endeavour I for the triangular course. Endeavour II equalled Ranger's time of 52min. 48scc. for the third leg. and negotiated the second leg 30sec. faster than Ranger. Experts are of the opinion that the defender’s superiority in the series was due to her being a higher pointing boat. This, coupled with luck and bad handling of Endeavour II accounted for Ranger's clean sweep. The crews of both yachts cheered each other at the conclusion to-day.
