103RD BIRTHDAY
REMARKABLE OLD LADY MRS. HARRIES, DVNRDI'N Slightly hard of hearing', bill otherwise in full possession of her faculties, Mrs. Emma Harries, of Cargill road, Dunedin, this week celebrated her hundred and third birthday. Gathered round her were many of her relatives, while all day long visitors arrived to offer their congratulations to this remarkable old lady who has lived through the reigns of five British sovereigns. Of an unassuming nature. Mrs. Harries still retains a grcal interest in life, and although she rarely leaves the house now, she is up and about every day except when the weal her is very cold.
Mrs. Harries was born in London on July 18, 1834, and she sailed for Australia when she was 22 years of age. She was married in the Commonwealth and remained there for 20 years before coming on to New Zealand with her husband. They arrived at Port Chalmers in 1888, but Mr. Harries died about eight years later, and Mrs. Harries then went to live with her brother. For the past 11 years she has been residing with her niece.
