INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL

COMBINED HOUSING SITE PROPOSAL TO GOVERNMENT GISBORNE NEG OTIATIONS (Special to the Herald.) NAPIER, this day. The purchase of a Gisborne block of 21 acres for the combined purpose of an intermediate school and a Government housing scheme is to be recommended to the Government by the Hawke’s Bay Education Board.

This was decided by the board at yesterday's meeting after a letter was read from the solicitors of the Tucker estate, owners of the property, which adjoined the Oval and the Victoria Domain.

The board required only 10 acres for this area, and the administrators of the estate refused to sell any but the whole block. The board desired 10 acres on the western boundary of the block so as to give access from Anzac street, and the administrators replied declining to entertain the proposal but offering the whole 21 acres at £1735, which was the present Government valuation.

The chairman, Mr. G. A. Maddison, reported that on receipt of that advice he had replied to the administrators submitting an alternative proposal to give access from Roebuck road and Disraeli street as well as Anzac street to the remaining 12 acres the board did not wish to purchase. This proposal, however, was rejected, the administrators maintaining that the proposed access did not provide for proper subdivision and roading, and suggesting that the purchase of the smaller area probably would be as costly in the long run as the whole block, after subdivision and roading were considered.

After discussion, the board agreed to ask the Government to purchase the whole area, apportioning sufficient for an intermediate school and leaving the rest for the erection of houses by the Housing Department.
