BASQUE CHILDREN RELIEF

STREET APPEAL ARRANGED W. N. R’. CO- OPER A TION The Women’s National Reserve has decided to forgo its street appeal next Friday in favour of that to be made by the Basque Children’s Relief Fund Committee. This was announced at a meeting of the committee held yesterday afternoon, when Mr. L. W. Anderson presided in the absence of the Rev. E. W. Batts. It was explained that because of the Gisborne Borough Council’s policy to allow only one street appeal a month, and because the W.N.R. had secured this month’s date, the committee’s application for a street appeal was unsuccessful. The Borough Council, however .suggested that it would raise no objection if the W.N.R. would forgo its date. The executive expressed appreciation to the Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., and the town clerk, Mr. W. M. Jenkins, and his staff for their willing assistance in the launching of the appeal. “There is every indication that the people of Gisborne are behind this effort and that the various subscription lists that have been made available will swell the fund to a much larger amount than that stated above, stated the chairman.

“A fine gesture had been made by the Women's National Reserve, which has offered to forgo its right to a street day on July 30 in favour of the Basque Children’s Relief Fund. It is understood that the appeal of the reserve will be made during September. Special thanks are due to Mrs. W. E. Goffe, the president, for her willingness in this connection. The executive has called a meeting at the Y.M.C.A. for 2.30 p.m. next Tuesday to complete the tentative arrangements made for the street day on Friday, July 30. Any organisations willing to assist are asked to communicate with the secretary.

“We wish to stress the fact that the Gisborne effort is to be a short-term appeal, and that it will be continuing for only two or three weeks. It is necessary for all who are willing to assist to act promptly and this may be done by leaving your donation at the office of The Herald, or posting direct to the honorary secretary-treasurer, Pastor L. R. Usmar, 118 Whitaker street, Gisborne.” There was a full attendance of members. The chairman reported that the fund was growing. Two further donations were to hand, the Hon. Hugh St. Leger’s £lO, and a “Mother’s" 3s, bringing the total to £2O.
