COUNTY COMPILES 270 CENTURY BY TOWNSEND N.Z. OPENERS COLLAPSE (From the Special Representative of the United Press Association.) (Reed. July 16, 11.30 a.m.) SUNDERLAND, July 15. The match between the New Zealand cricketers and Durham ended m a draw.

The county batsmen carried their first innings total to 270, and New

Zealand, in the second innings, declared with six wickets down for 159. At stumps, Durham had lost four wickets for 100.

The weather was dull and cold for concluding day, and the attendance was 2000.

Durham compiled a good first innings score. Townsend, a former Oxford blue who has toured Egypt and India with English teams, played a really fine innings, passing the century mark unbeaten. His score included 21 fours and one six.

New Zealand lost five wickets for 41 runs, mainly owing to the fine lefthand fast bowling of Herbert, of Durham University.

Lowry and Donnelly recovered the position with a bright, sound partnership, which realised 90. The declaration with six down for 159 left the county an hour and a-half to bat.

With Roberts available, the attack was stronger than in the first innings, but Durham played out time despite good length bowling by Lamason and Hadlee. In the annual cricket match at Lords, Players defeated Gentlemen by eight wickets.

Players in the first made 229, Hutto/n scoring 34 and Hardstaff 39. Fames took five wickets for 65.

Gentlemen, who made 165 in the first, in the second scored 184, Mit-chell-Innes making 50, Dempster nil, and Kimpton three. Players in the second lost two lor 121, Compton being 34 not out and Paynter 37 not out.
