DEMOCRACY ON TRIAL

MR. SEMPLE’S BELIEF

DICTATORSHIPS ASSAILED

SYDNEY, July 14.

A vigorous attack upon dictatorships and Communism, was made by Mr. R. Semple, the New Zealand Minister of Public Works and Transport, in an address to the Travel League of New South Wales. To-day, he said, democracy was on trial. It was democracy or dictatorships. If the politicians were loyal and steadfast in all their actions, they would continue to perpetuate democracy,- which was the best form ot government. If they played pitch and toss with the people’s birthright they would cause democracy to crumble. The British Empire was the sheet anchor of democracy, and it was their job to strengthen the weak links in the chain which bound the Empire together so that they could challenge the world that threatened its form of government.

Communism, ,he said, was little separated from a dictatorship. Their task was to make certain that the ruthless, callous methods of Communism should never fasten on their country.

Mr. Semple, at an interview with the Premier of New South Wales, Mr. B. S. B. Stevens, handed him a silk New Zealand flag which will be flown at the 150th anniversary celebrations next year.
