THE WEATHER To-day’s North Island Report Blue skies were reported this morning at Napier, Tauranga, and Auckland, but overcast conditions continued elsewhere in the North Island. Light to moderate southerly breezes were general. The barometer had commenced to fall again. Temperatures at 9 o’clock were: Auckland 53 degrees, Tauranga and Gisborne 48, Opotiki 50, Napier and Wellington 45. Rough seas were reported at East Cape; elsewhere moderate or smooth. Last Night’s Forecast A shallow depression is crossing the northern portion of the North Island to-day, and a series of slight depressions continues to pass in the faxsouth. An anticyclone covers eastern Australia and the western Tasman Sea, however, and is gradually moving towards the Dominion. The forecast is for winds northerly at first over the southern half of the South Island, but otherwise southerlies prevailing, moderate to strong generally, and at times squally about and north of Cook Strait, but decreasing gradually tomorrow. Seas in New Zealand waters will be rather rough to rough north of Farewell Spit and Kaikoura, elsewhere, slight to moderate, but rising again in the far south. In the eastern Tasman Sea there will be southerly winds generally, but westerlies at first in the far southern portion, moderdU.to strong, with rather rough seas but the wind and sea will slowly decrease. The weather, for the most part, will be fair to fine in the South Island, but some scattered showers are probable in the eastern and far southern areas. Conditions will still be changeable in the North Island, with occasional passing showers in many places, but gradually improving. Temperatures will be cold, with some sharp frosts in the south. Midday Forecast General inference.—The shallow depression which covered the North Island yesterday has moved away eastwards. A secondary depression has, however, been crossing the South Island during the night, and at 9 a.m. the line of lowest pressure lay through Cook Strait. An intense anticyclone still covers eastern Australia and the Tasman Sea, and barometers may be expected to rise over the Dominion, Forecast.—Moderate to strong southerly winds, later decreasing. Weather cold and changeable, and somewhat squally, with passing showers, but improving to-morrow. Seas rather rough to rough.
