WOMEN’S DIVISION

DOMINION CONFERENCE PRES IDE NT’S ADD RESS (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, last night. The official opening of the Dominion conference of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was performed to-day before a large gathering of delegates by the Mayoress, Mrs. T. C. A. Hislop. Mrs. C. K. Wilson, Dominion president, welcomed the Mayoress and visitors. Mrs. Hislop said that the increase in membership of nearly 2000 not only showed the increased interest in the work done, but was also a great source of encouragement. Greetings were extended to the division by represenltatives of Women’s Institutes, Plunket Society, ' the Red Cross Society, and by Mrs. W. Lee Martin. Both the Farmers' Union and the Women’s Division had taken an important step forward this yeor, said Mrs. Wilson, and seemed more compact and secure. Yet neithker was quite satisfied with the position. At present the world's products were practically at the command of the people. Farmers’ wives needed to ask themselves whether this progress was going to claim its victims, for might not the farmers still have to feed the world under cost?

“We must be ready to put up a fight, to make sacrifices to better our conditions, to hold together and stand by our bread and butter,” she added.
