RAILWAY WORKING £69,500 DECREASE SHOWN PERIOD TO END OF MAY A decrease of £69,513 in working profit, compared with the result for the corresponding period last year, is shown by the accounts of the Railway Department for the four weeks ended May 29, an abstract of which was published in the Gazette. The net revenue was £46,245, against £115,758 last year. The gross revenue for the whole system was £630,043, an increase of £25,892, and the expenses were £583,798, an increase of £95,405. The operating profit on the North Island railways was £18,041, or £30,071 less than last year, while that in the South Island decreased by £33,940 from £44,943 to £11,003. In the North Island gross revenue increased by £16,539 to £332,927, and expenses by £46,610 to £314,886. In the South Island the revenue of £231,282 was £514 lower, while expenses increased by £33,426 to £220,279. Net revenue from other than railway services was £17,201, a decrease of £5502. The gross revenue was £65,834, and the expenditure £48.633. The net revenue for the two periods to May 29 of this year was £179,969, compared with £240,128 last year, a decrease of £60,159. The gross revenue was £1,402,019, an increase of £231,353, while the working expenses were £1,222,050, or £291,512 more than in 1936.
