MOUNTING BIG GUNS
SHIPS IN U.S.A. NAVY ANSWER' TO JAPAN WASHINGTON, July 10. The United States Department of State has announced that 16-inch guns will be mounted on the two new battleships which will be laid down in 1937, this merely confirming what has been regarded as inevitable since Japan refused the British and American appeals to subscribe to a 14-inch maximum calibre.
The formal announcement stated that it was with the greatest reluctance the United States was forced to take this step. It is understood in Washington that Japan’s refusal to agreed to limit naval guns to the 14inch calibre did not signify her intention to use larger than 16-inch guns, but was rather in pursuance of her policy of abstaining from naval limitation agreements while her demand for parity with Britain and the United States is opposed.
