BOY FATALLY INJURED
FALL FROM MOTOR LORRY FOUND LYING ON ROAD (Per Press Association.) WHAKATANE, this day. After falling or jumping from a motor lorry on which he was riding without the driver's knowledge, James Henry Shepherd, 11, a son of Mr. W. Shepherd, an engine driver, of Taneatua, was found lying on the Tane-atua-Ruatoki road on Saturday afternoon unconscious. He died in the Whakatane Hospital yesterday morning from a fractured skull. He also suffered a broken leg, cuts, and abrasions.
It is surmised that he boarded the back of the lorry to return to the township from the station, where he had taken his father’s tea. When about to jump off he caught his clothes in some projection, being dragged. The lorry driver continued unaware of the fatality.
