FLEMINGTON MEETING LAST END’S GRAND NATIONAL WIN FOR ROYAL ORDER (Elor. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) MELBOURNE, July 11. A comparative outsider, the South Australian gelding Last End, won the Grand National Steeplechase at Flemington to-day in brilliant fashion, after allowing Seymour to make the pace for threequarters of the distance. Santa Casa, who finished fourth, never threatened danger. Cape Li lock, who was great ly fancied, ran only moderately. Last End’s rider, F. Dummett, also won the Grand National Hurdles on Triteleisa, which is a unique feat in the annals of the Nationals. The New Zealander, Royal Order, although last away in the Two-Year-Old Handicap, won stylishly. Results:— Doutta Gal la Hurdle Handicap.— Dakwood, 10.5 (Douglas), 1; King Siris, 9.4 (Jennings), 2; Jack Thrice, 9.5 (Fullarton), 3. Five started. Won by a length, seven lengths between second and third. Time, 4.13 A. Two-Year-Old Mile Handicap.— Royal Order, 8.1 (Jenkins), 1; Ortelles Star. 7.11 (Preston), 2; Gladness, 7.5 (Cooper), 3. Twelve started. Won by I ', lengths, 2). lengths between second and third. Time, 1.41:;. Grand National Steeplechase.—Last End, 10.2 (Dummett). 1: Seymour. 11.3 (Fullarton), 2; Montargia, 9.9 (McMahon), 3. All started. The early leaders wore Rehabeam, Lady Madge, Bermuda, Seymour, Last End, and Santa Casa. The field diminished passing the mile, where, in quick succession, Lady Madge, Bermuda and Stobus fell. Rehabeam and Monkey Tricks lost their riders. Seymour went to the front, closely attended by Last End. The pair raced together over a mile, with Montargis, Santa (’ara, Tongalla, Wnkeriffc, Cape Li-

lock some lengths in the rear. Last End took the lead at the six furlongs and finished resolutely, and despite Seymour’s strong challenge, won by four lengths, with Montargis eight lengths away third. Santa Casa was fourth and then came Tongalla, Wakerifle, Cape Lilock, and Character. Time, 6.8 J. Dummett had a rough ride, Last End striking four fences, at the last of which he nearly fell. Dummett lost his stirrup but regained it after a desperate effort in the last few yards. Riddle was unplaced in the July Handicap, which was won by Alinura. Footscray Steeplechase. —Jehu, 9.12 (Godfrey), 1; Tezpur, 11.6 (Maher), 2; Lady’s Maid, 9.10 (Snyders), 3. Fourteen started. Won by 20 lengths, a head between second and third. Time, 4.3. y. Only eight finished.
