JAPAN’S WHALERS
USE AS NAVAL TANKERS SHIP TO CARRY PLANE TOKIO, June 2G It is learnt that Japanese military and naval authorities are encouraging the construction of whaling vessels, because they can be used as tankers for the transport of petroleum during the off season or in any national emergency. The Nisshin Maru No. 1 is due at Yokohama on July 5 with 20,000 tons of Californian petroleum. She loaded this cargo after delivering her last season’s production of whale oil in Holland. Large crowds have been viewing the new British whaler Terjeviken unloading petroleum, because she is the first vessel of her kind seen at Yokohama. It is reported that provision has been made on the new Nisshin Maru No. 2 for the carrying of a scouting aeroplane for the purpose of sighting whales.
