Mr. and Mrs. I. R. Mercer, Pukekohe, arrived in Gisborne yesterday and are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. G. A. McWhirter, Peel street. Constable R. Julian is at present on sick leave. His friends will regret to learn that his illness is more severe than was thought when he was admitted to hospital. Mr. J. E. Benson, president of the Poverty Bay provincial district of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, has arranged to leave to-morrow morning for Wellington to attend the union's annual conference on Wednesday, as the representative of Northern Hawke’s Bay, Wairoa and Poverty Bay.
Passengers by East Coast Airways’ planes between Napier and Gisborne yesterday included Mesdames G. Caves, MacLeod, H. Harris, A. Fairlie, D. J. Parker, and H. Roberts; Misses C. Fairlie, A. Bell, S. Bassett, Lawson, P. Crawford, and K. Joyce; Messrs. D. A. Sherriff, A. Coleman, E. C. Hartridge, E. Preen, E. Merryweather, McAneny, H. Roberts, R. H. Cook, N. Cowley, E. Russell, J. Mendelssohn, and the Rev. J. R. Gardiner.
Mr. R. E. Champtaloup, touring manager of the Automobile Association (Auckland), Mr. H. Ford, of the patrol staff, and Mr. R. R. S. Whiteley, of the louring department, arrived in Gisborne yesterday afternoon via Waikaremoana and Tiniroto. Accompanied by the resident A.A. patrol, Mr. D. M. McGregor, the party left Gisborne this morning on a survey trip of the Coast and expect to return to Gisborne to-morrow or Monday. The party will leave for Auckland again towards the middle of the week.
Members of all departments of the Poverty Bay Eleetric-P,ower Board gathered yesterday afternoon to farewell one of the clerical staff, Mr. H. Salmon, who left to-day to take a position with the Gisborne Gas Company. The departing officer had been with the Power Board for eight years, and in a suitable speech, wishing Mr. Salmon success in the future, the managing-secretary, Mr. R. P. Baigent, presented him with a seven-day striking clock and a razor on behalf of the staff. Mr, Salmon briefly replied.

Mr. D. C. Stevens will leave Gisborne next Wednesday to take over a position on the staff of the Hawke’s Bay Herald-Tribune and in view of his impending departure from Gisborne the staff of the Forrest Advertising Agency, of which he was an employee, met yesterday afternoon to bid him “au revoir.” Mr. Stevens had been on the staff for about three years and, on behalf of the signs department, Mr. J. Moir presented him with a pipe and expressed regret that their association was to be broken. On behalf of the firm, Mr. E. W. Forrest made Mr. Stevens a presentation of a dictionary. Mr. Stevens made a suitable reply.
Advice of a humorous nature was tendered Miss Rona Stephenson yesterday afternoon when she was met by the staff of the Gisborne Central School and farewclled prior to leaving for California at the end of the month to undergo a course of instruction in physical culture. In making the presentation on behalf of the staff and children, the headmaster, Mr. J. E. Shimmin, expressed appreciation of the manner in which Miss Stephenson had worked during her service as a supplementary assistant, and joined with the other members of the teaching staff in wishing her every success in her new sphere. She had already shown her capabilities in regard to physical instruction in the school. She would be amazed at the life, entertainment, and hospitality of the Americans, and Mr. Shimmin said she should thoroughly enjoy the conditions while on the other side of the Pacific.
