ENGLISH IN DESERT

EXPLORER SURPRISED EXPLANATION BY SHEIK (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. In the heart of the Sahara, the Hon. Arthur W. North, an American explorer, met an Arab sheik who spoke perfect English, this being unusual in a land where Arabic and French are regarded as the universal languages. . , . Mr. North asked him where he learned to speak English and the sheik answered: “I have 100 shepherds. I count my sheep by the thousand. I learnt English that I might read New Zealand reports on sheep.” This tale was told to-day after the arrival of the Mariposa by Mr. North who, with his daughter and a camera man, arrived on an educational expedition. Mr. North has penetrated into many almost unknown lands and is now “discovering” New Zealand.
