MOTOR REGISTRATIONS
GISBORNE INCREASE 24.8% IN SIX YEARS When the figures were taken out this morning for the June quarter, Post Office officials handling the registration of motor vehicles in the Gisborne district noted that the total was close to that for the registrations at the end of September, 1936. The totals were of the new registrations and renewals for the Gisborne district only and not for the Gisborne postal district. A further investigation was made and it was found that the average increase in registrations since 1931, six years ago, was 24.8 per cent. The classes of vehicles were grouped and the increase in cars on the roads was found to be 258, commercial vehicles 198, and motor-cycles 38. The increases in each case were taken on the figures for the years to the end of June. The greatest increase is in the number of commercial vehicles, which have risen by 44.6 per cent. The heading commercial vehicles included all except cars, cycles, and taxis, the last-mentioned coming under the heading of cars for the purposes of the comparison. The increase in cycles was 17.6 per cent and cars 12.2 per cent.
