REPRESENTATIVE TRIALS PLAYERS' PROSPECTS SELECTION POSSIBLES Review by "Sticks" The names of two teams each for ladies and for the men to play trial matches next week are being prepared by the selectors, and are expected to be announced early next week. The selectors, Messrs. T. Tuhoe, R. 11. Moore and D. M. Gracie, since their appointment have made a careful study of all the players, noting variations in the form of certain players. The player who performs consistently well throughout the season is expected to have greater chance of selection than one who plays brilliantly one or two Saturdays and is off colour for several games.
Most players. have their good and bad days. Sometimes the style of play adopted by the opposing team contributes to the success or otherwise of one's tactics, or perhaps one is off colour. The selectors have to decide who can be depended upon to be most regularly in form and whose style of play can be readily adapted to any new tricks that might be brought up against him. Proposed Teams
Those who should have greatest consideration on their play this season so far for selection in the A and B. teams are the following:— ' Men. —A team: Goal, Oxbrow (Defence); fullbacks, Hueston (Foresters), and P. Miller (Caledonian); halfbacks, K. Nicol (Y.M.C.A.), P. Jones (Y.M.C.A.), and I. Douglas (Caledonian); forwards, B. Harrison (Y.M.C.A.), Marshall (Defence), Watchman (Wesleyan), G. Slade (Caledonian), and A. McLean (Caledonian). B. team: Goal, Coker (Y.M.C.A.); fullbacks, Purcell (Defence), and Stacey (Y.M.C.A.); halfbacks, Le Bas (Defence), Ball (Defence), and R. Lowe (Caledonian); forwards, A. Crothers (Caledonian), Stichbury (Y.M.C.A.), Jock Harrison (Caledonian), Prentice (Y.M.C.A.), and Post (Defence).
Ladies.—A team: Goal, Mrs. Nicholas (Coronation); Mrs. Watts (Kia Toa), and Miss Allen (Kia Toa): half-backs, Mrs. Tuhoe (Waituhi), Miss Tuhoe (Kia Toa), and Miss Barkwith (Coronation); forwards, Miss Lloyd (Coronation), Miss Ruru (Y.M.P., Mrs. Nicol (Coronation), Miss Toroa (Y.M.P.), and Mrs. Neilson (Coronation). B team: Goal, Miss Kapuaroa (Y.M.P.); fullbacks, Miss Tooke (Waituhi), and Miss Sim (Coronation); half-backs, Miss Miller (Kia Toa), Miss Gillett (Coronation), and Miss Ehau (Old Girls); forwards, Mrs. Sangwell (Kia Toa), Mrs. Barry (Kia Toa), Mrs. Le Bas (Kia Toa).. Miss Weipehana (Y.M.P.), and Mrs. Pere (Waituhi). Other Promising Players In placing the men as mentioned above, some players well worthy of a trial, and who may be given a test at intervals, have been omitted. In the backs Lynsky (Y.M.C.A.) is nearing the required standard, but should require another season in senior hockey to give him the necessary experience. File (Foresters), on the other hand, is nearing the retiring age. Had he maintained last season's form he certainly would be worth a place, despite'the fact that that he is older than most of the players participating in the competition. Nicol (Defence) is likewise nearing the retiring age, though he still maintains good form. Clem Scholium (Defence) has been on the injured list for some weeks. Jim Harrison (Caledonian) and Keith Harrison (Y.M.C.A.) are also worthy of consideration.
Among the ladies there are also several not mentioned above who might be worthy of consideration by the selectors, but those placed here seem on form to date to be the best in the competition. N.Z. Challenge Shield
Wellington is having the first challenge against Auckland for the New Zealand Challenge Shield, and the game will be played on July 31. Auckland has been asked by the New Zealand Hockey Association to submit a date for the Poverty Bay challenge. Otago has challenged for the shield, providing the game could be played in Wellington, but the Auckland association has declined to agree to this. Glsbornltes Elsewhere Barry Moore, who played for Foresters until last season, is now in Auckland, and is playing fullback for Mount Eden, who last week defeated Grammar, until then the leading team in the senior competition. Mount Eden, at one time the champion team, has been down on its luck this year, and prior to last Saturday had only one championship point to its credit. Grammar was beaten by five goals to three, and Moore was mentioned "In press reports as one of the prominent players for his side. Tom Turbitt, a former All Black, is not taking an active playing part in hockey in Marlborough this year, but is assisting as a coach, and also keeps in close touch with his old team, Caledonian, in Gisborne by correspondence, and is able to pass on some valuable advice.
GAME IN WAIROA WARATAH BEAT UNITED (Herald Correspondent.) Only one game was played under the Wairoa County Hockey Sub-As-sociation this week. Waratah beat United by four goals to three.
