LEICESTER'S BIG SCORE THREE CENTURIES MADE TOURISTS 243 FOR THREE KERR MAKES 116 NOT OUT (From the Special Representative of the United Press Association.) (Reed. July 9, 11.30 a.m.) LEICESTER, July 8. Continuing the match against the New Zealand cricketers to-day, Leicester proceeded to compile the tall score of 557 for the loss of only four wickets, Armstrong being the third man in the side to make a century.
The New Zealanders started well after the early dismissal of Hadlee, and at stumps had scored. 243 for the loss of three wickets, Kerr being 116 not out.
With unhurried deliberation, Leicester progressed to make the largest score against New Zealand in England, beating the 549 made by Sussex in 1931.
Even Dempster was subdued, so steady was the bowling, and so alert was the fielding.
Roberts, after one over and one wicket retired on account of neuritis in the shoulder. Thereafter, the attack was carried on by Cowie and Gallichan. The New Zealanders manfully persevered in their difficult task of dismissing batsmen who refused to take the slightest risk. Kerr and Moloney In New Zealand's innings, after Hadlee had been dismissed for the twelfth time leg before, Kerr and Moloney put on 120 in 2J hours for the second wicket. Moloney was typically patient and correct. •; • Wallace, in. a brief but merry stay at the wicket, hit five fours. With Donnelly, Kerr advanced in workmanlike manner and passed the century—his first in England. His feat seemed to be almost inevitable, for from the time he arrived at the wickets he played without hurry but with complete confidence. He employed a full range of strokes. He hit nine fours and one six.
Donnelly, after a careful beginning, executed many fine drives and hooks. He hit four fours and one six. Evidence of the character of the pitch is provided by the fact that only seven wickets have fallen in two full days for four centuries and three half-centuries.
