UNION OF LEAGUE ASSURANCES GIVEN . (Britten Official Wireless.) RUGBY, July 7. The Prime Minister, Mr. Neville Chamberlain, has accepted an invitation'to become one of the honorary presidents of the League of Nations. Writing to Viscount Cecil, who extended the invitation on behalf of the union, Mr. Chamberlain emphasised the point that the royal charter of the union provided that it should be a non-sectarian and non-party organisation, without any political bearing attached to it, "to work, by all means in its power, for the good of the League of Nations."
"Mr. Chamberlain, in expressing the view that the preservation of this characteristic was essential, said he accepted the invitation, confidently relying upon the efforts of the union's leaders to preserve it from political influences and attachments.
Replying, Viscount Cecil said that full precautions would be taken to prevent a recurrence of such tendencies as those to which Mr. Chamberlain referred. He expressed the warmest gratitude for Mr. Chamberlain's acceptance of the honorary presidency.
