AUCKLANDERS' TURN

SECOND DAY AT TRENTHAM

FAVOURITES' BETTER RUN ENGE'S DECISIVE WIN (Special to the Herald.) WELLINGTON, this day. It was Auckland's turn on the second day of the Wellington Racing Club's winter meeting' at Trentharr, yesterday. Horses owned and trainee in that province- won half the programme, including a double for the Hamilton owner, Mr. G. Seifert. Auckland also had a minor placing with Jewelled Girdle. The weather was beautifully fine, but the going was heavy and holding after a hard frost o'vernight. Favourites, however, had a little better run than on the first day. and won three races in succession. also running a second and third. The attendance was very good for an off day and, although it was smaller than on Tuesday, the betting was less than £4OOO below the opening day and showed an increase of a similar amount on the corresponding day last year. As usual on the intervening day. racing was mainly confined to the flat. The principal event, the Parliamentary Handicap, was won very decisively by Enge, who dead-heated in the Whyte Handicap the first day. Enge revelled in the heavy going and made no race of it over the concluding stages. He has shown remarkable form at the meeting for an aged horse who has undergone an operation for wind trouble.

Grey Honour's Success

The other principal event on the flat, the Members' Handicap, was won by the Riccarton representative, Grey Honour. The main jumping race of the two that were held during the dav, the Matai Steeplechase, was won by the improving Chang, admirably handled bv the southern horseman, R. Register. 'Register is having a good meeting as he was also successful on Santoft in the Wellington Steeplechase. In this race the favourite. Streamline, began to jump very bad y at the end of a round, and finally his rider by hitting hard at the sod wall the last time. On this showing he would have had no chance even had he stayed on the course in the Wellington Steeplchase, and it appears clear that he requires a good deal more experience at the crosscountry game. Mr G Seifert. who won with Chang. also 'won earlier in the day with Young Paddon in the Trial Plate. •Probablv no family in the stud book has a more consistent winning record under winter conditions at Trentham than this, out of the Sir Frisco mare Ladv Frisco. White Comet, Paddon. Chang Grand Score and Young Paddon have all in turn been winner? on the course under the worst track conditions. White Comet and Chang are brothers by Day Comet, while Paddon is bv Archiestown Grand Score by Grand Knight, and Young Paddon bv Surveyor. • Keen racing was witnessed in the majority of the events, and no casualties resulted from falls in the jumping races.
