WHITE MAN SENTENCED
REMOVAL OF ABORIGINAL WANTED TO MARRY HER DARWIN, June 23. John Palmer, 43. a white crocodile hunter, was charged at Darwin Police Court this morning with having taken n Melville Island lubra, Maudic. 35, from Darwin to Cape Don, without the permission of the Aboriginal Department, and with having associated with her.
Defendant said that he was seeking a divorce from his half-caste wife, and wanted to marry Maudie. Palmer's defence was that the lubra was detribalised and considered her home territory to be Port Essington, whither he was taking her when captured.
In fining Palmer £5 or two months' imprisonment on the first charge, and £SO or four months' imprisonment on the second, the sentences to run concurrently, the magistrate, Mr. G. Piggott, said that it was an unusual and awkward ease. In sentencing Palmer he hoped that the punishment would be a deterrent to other similarly sentimental white men.
