ALL BLACK TRIALS

SELECTION OP LEADERS CHANGES IN THE TEAMS POVERTY BAY BACK CHOSEN (IVr Press Association.) WELLINGTON, last night. Tne executive of the New Zealand Rugby Union to-night finalised ar-

rangements for the inter-Isianrt match, and the first trial match to be played at Athletic Park on Saturday. The following captains and deputycaptains were appointed to lead the teams: —

South Island: Captain, N. A. Mitchell, Southland; deputy-captain, R. R. King, West Coast. North Island: Captain, L. Clothier, Hawke's Bay; deputy-captain, R. 11. McKenzie, Manawatu.

Probables: Captain, L. L. Griffiths, Wellington; deputy-captain, F. H. F. Smith, Wellington. Possibles: Captain, B. A. Killeen, Auckland; deputy-captain, F. J. Green, Otago. It was reported that some of the players originally selected had had to drop out owing to injuries. J. M. Watt, Wellington, one of the wing three-quarters, chosen for the North Island team, is suffering from an injured knee, and this has necessitated a rearrangement of the rearguard. D. G. Barton, Wanganui, will come into the earn as centre three-quarter, and J. L. Sullivan, Taranaki, will take Watt’s place on the wing. R. H. White, Hawke’s Bay, who was selected as one of the wing-three-quarters for the Probables team, is also suffering from an injured knee, and lie will be replaced by A. E. McAneny, Poverty Bay.

L. Niven, Otago, one of the reserve forwards for the South Island team, who had to drop out owing to a family bereavement, will bo replaced by E. Chesterman, Southland. It was decided that both matches on Saturday should be played in 45minute spells, and that replacement of injured players shall be allowed. The international rules as to kicking into touch from any part of the field will be observed.

TRIAL FOR McANENY

POVERTY BAY’S NOMINEE The Poverty Bay and Celtic Club winger, Alec McAneny, will be accorded warm congratulations on securing a game in the All Black trial, to be played in Wellington on Saturday. Notification of his inclusion in the Probables side for Saturday's game, in place of R. H. White, was received by McAneny yesterday, and he was able to make arrangements to leave to-day for Wellington to keep the engagement. Nominated by the Poverty Bay selector, Mr. Tom French, together with E. Grant and R. Rogers, Alec McAneny lias made two appearances before representatives of the New Zealand Rugby Union’s selection committee, in Gisborne and Hastings respectively. In neither game was he able to produce his best form, but it is evident that despite his lack of opportunities on these occasions, his size, speed, and handling ability must have made an impression.

A. McANENY in Wanganui, when the Poverty Bay team visited that town last week, he was considered to be the best of the four wingers on the ground, and even when played at centre-three-quarters, a position in which he is not yet at home, he gave a good account of himself.

Physically, the Poverty Bay nominee for Saturday’s trial game is all that could be asked for by a selector, for he stands Gft. in height, weighs 13st 41b, and moreover he has youth on his side, his age being only 10 years. His three years in senior football have developed him a good deal, and he has not yet filled out as he should do with his substantial frame. lie is not yet a master or wing tactics, but he has a fine turn of speed, and is a determined defender. It is safe to predict that even if he does not secure All Black honours for this year, he has only to go on improving ns in the past season to qualify for consideration by the All Black selectors very shortly.

SCHOOLBOYS’ MATCHES

DRAW FOR TO.MORROW The senior and junior Rugby teams in the competition of the Poverty Bay Primary Schools’ Sports Association will play <i further series of matches to-morrow afternoon on the Oval. The matches will start at 3 o’clock and the draw is as follows: — Senior grade.—To Hapara v. Marist, on the Oval: Gisborne v. Kaiti, on the Oval: Mangapapa, a bye. Junior grade.—Te Hapara v.
