DRIVER'S PLIGHT
OAR IN CATTLE-STOPS EXPRESS TRAIN STOPPED Stopped by a motorist whose car had become wedged in the cattlestops at a level crossing south of Marton about 10.30 o’clock on Sunday night, the north-bound limited express was delayed for 20 minutes. The train reached Auckland 45 min utes late.
Failing to negotiate the level crossing, the motor car struck the cattle- ( stops, in which its wheels became jammed. The driver, who was unable to shift the car under its own power, 1 realised that the train was due to pass, and set o(f down the line to attract the attention of the train crew j before a collision occurred. He was 1 successful, and the express was stopped clear of the jammed car. j Removing the motor car from the track was a problem. The train crew < and others assisted, however, and the car was lifted out of the stops and to the side, of the track, allowing the express to pass after a delay of 20 minutes. The car appeared to be little damaged.
