PROVISION OF WORK

H.B. AND EAST COAST ADDITIONAL 500 PLACED The gratifying manner in which the local bodies were co-operating with the Government in an effort to find work for able-bodied men at present on sustenance was mentioned by the acting-Minister of Labour, the Hon. P. C. Webb, in an interview in Wellington. He said that through their efforts in Hawke's Bay and on the East Coast, work had been found for an additional 500 men in those districts. Mr. Webb said that the Government, in co-operation with the local bodies in various districts, was making considerable progress in its campaign for the employment of additional unemployed. The Minister said that Mr. W. Bromley, of the Labour Department, had visited Hawke’s Bay and Gisborne, where he had discussed the question of placing additional men in work. Mr. Bromley had advised him that the local bodies in those districts wholeheartedly co-operated with the Government. “I greatly appreciate the spirit in which the local bodies so far have met our wishes in this respect,” said Mr. Webb, “and I am quite confident that by the time all the local bodies in New Zealand have had an opportunity of availing themselves of the assistance now being offered, very many works of importance will be pushed along.”
