GISBORNE WEATHER

FIRST MONTH’S RETURNS

122 HOURS’ SUNSHINE

TEMPERATURE EXTREMES

The first climatological returns for a completed month have been compiled by East Coast Airways observer at the-now station at the aerodrome, the 'statistics giving a considerable amount of information regarding the weather conditions.

Of outstanding interest, perhaps, since it is the first time that records have been taken in this district for many years, are the records of sunshine. There was bright sunshine on all but seven days during the month, the longest periods in one day being 9.4 hours on May' 7 and 9.3 hours on May 17. On 15 days there were live hours or more of bright sunshine, and the total for the month was 122.3 hours.

Eight frosts were registered during the month, the heaviest, 5.3 degrees, being on May S. There were four successive frosts between May 24 and 27.

A striking feature of the returns was the consistency of the wind direction. On 25 of the 31 days it was from the north-west. On one day there was no wind, on three days it was south-west, and on one day each easterly' and north-easterly. The maximum velocity during the month, recorded at 9 a.tn. each day, was six on the Beaufort scale, equal to 22-2 i mites an hour and officially described as a strong breeze. This velocity was reached on one day only', and on tour others it reached four, a moderate breeze of 12 to Hi miles an Hour. The minimum temperature in the screen was 33 degrees on May 7 and the maximum 69.4 degrees on May b>. Earth temperatures show surprisingly little variation. At a depth of lft. below the surface, the lowest temperature was 50.8 degrees arid the highest 57 degrees. At 3ft. the variation whs even less, the extremes being 56 and 58 degrees. Visibility throughout the month was consistently good, there being onlytwo days on which it fell ‘to No. G on the international scale, this being cquivnlept to moderate visibility. Maximum visibility is No. 9, and tins was recorded more often thhn not during the month, while on seven other days it was No. 7. ~
