N.Z. LABOUR PARTY

GISBORNE BRANCH MEETS DISSENSION DEPRECATED “ANTI-LABOUR PROPAGANDA” Held in the Selvyn Hall last evening, the monthly meeting of the Gisborne branch of the New. Zealand. Labour Party provided interesting material for discussion, and drew a good attendance, Mr. E. Harris presiding over the gathering. In connection with an appeal irom the Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., asking that all members of tiie party donate one day’s pay to the King George V memorial lunii, it was pointed out that most members already had contributed to this worthy object, and that a donation had been sent from the Labour Representation Committee, to tiie amount of £lO. Keen interest was displayed in the proposals advanced for improving the New Zealand Standard, and arrangements were made for subscribing to the capital of the journal through the branch. Correspondence which has appeared in the Herald over the signatures “G.S.” and “Sam Smiles” was discussed briefly, and it was agreed that the object of the writers was to create in the minds of the public a feeling that dissension had arisen between the district member of Parliament and the Gisborne branch of the Labour Party. Speakers emphasised that the relations between tha district member and the branch president were perfectly harmonious, and assurances that no dissension existed were forthcoming from the two people most concerned, the letters being regarded purely as anti-Labour propaganda, and best ignored. A motion of confidence in the district member and the Labour Party’s branch president was carried unanimously. Five new members were nominated during the evening, and a welcome was extended to a visitor from Dannevirke. The report of the delegate to th* annual conference was held over for discussion at a subsequent meeting.
