N.Z. 272 FOR NINE

BEST TOTAL SO FAR MOLONEY'S 77 RUNS BRIGHT 46 BY WALLACE OLD TRAFFORD GAME (Klec. Tol. Copyright—United Press Assn.) LONDON, May 30.

Facing the stiffest trial of the tour so far, on Old Trafford cricket ground, where, they will play England in the second test, the New Zealand cricketers opened inauspiciously on a perfect wicket in delightful weather against Lancashire yesterday. The first three wickets fell in an hour and a-half for 56 runs. Wallace and Moloney then retrieved the position considerably, largely through another aggressively brilliant innings by the former, who hit six fours, three threes and only five singles in an hour, giving an attractive display of driving, hooking and cutting. Sixty-eight runs were added for the fourth wicket. . Moloney took over two hours to reach his half century, but he held the innings together and was not disturbed by anv howler.

Donnelly assisted with a stand of 29 runs before falling a victim to a new ball. Moloney after" 220 minutes of patient batting, with only three boundary strokes, was similarly dismissed.

Lamason and Tindill were just set tling down when a thunderstorm interrupted play for nearly half an hour.

Ninth Wicket Stand

The pair then steadily compiled an invaluable 56 runs in a timely partnership for the ninth wicket. Neither batsmen appeared to he greatly troubled hy the attack though the scoring rate was slow. Tindill was unbeaten after batting an hour and a quarter. ■ New Zealand finished the day with the highest total of the tour, a performance which seemed improbable at lunch.

The Lancashire team- is -as follows; W. H. L. Lister, Paynter. Hopwood. Iddon, Oldfield, Watson, Place, Phillipson, Pollard, Duckworth and Wilkinson.

One of the features of the day was the success of the new slow bowler, Wilkinson. The attendance exceeded 6000. Details of scores are: NEW-ZEALAND First Innings
