MILK SHORTAGE
NONE FOR SCHOOLS DIFFICULTY IN BLENHEIM A. peculiar position has arison in Blenheim in connection with tho milk ration schemes for school children. Although a Government grant is available (o cover the cost of tho milk, HO or 00 gallons of which would bo required daily in the Blenheim area, the committee set up to control the scheme has been forced, after exhaustive inquiries, to tho conclusion that it will be impossible to obtain tho necessary supplies. It has been decided, therefore to cancel the ration this term and steps are being taken to ensure a supply in tho spring.
Tho secretary of tho committee said that no pains had been spared in order fully to explore every channel of supply,* but in every instanco tho committee had been confronted by tho fact that the licensed dairies at present supplying tho borough could only cope with the domestic demand, and if the requirements for the schools wore diverted a very serious milk shortage -would undoubtedly arise.
Tho committee had given up. tho idea of a winter ration with a good deal of Teluctanco, as tho scheme had been operated last year with so much success and benefit.
Prom inquiries made among dairymen it appears that tho position has been caused by tho fact that the regulations governing tho sale of milk for public consumption call for such a high standard in regard to farm equipment that a number of those formerly engaged havo given up their milk rounds and now sond their milk direct to a factory.
