TIKITIKI POST OFFICE
EXPANSION OP BUSINESS 'MINISTER IMPRESSED (Herald Special Reporter) TIKTJTKI, this day. The Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Sernple, was impressed with the desirability for the replacement of the- present post office at Tikiliki with a larger building. When he inspected the present office yesterday, the postmaster, Mr. .1. F. Wilcox, explained that the business had increased enormously during the past 18 months since the removal of the hotel and police station from Port Awanm. The office now served a population of 2000 people, Mr. Wilcox said, adding that in addition to hotel and police station, a new office was that of the Native Department. The telephone exchange now had .145 subscribers and in three years the number of pupils on the school roll had increased from 132 to 173.
The staff attached to the office totalled seven, including two linesmen, and for the live engaged insido the office the small space was very congested. Mr. A. Gordon Ilultquist, M.P., stated that- the Postmaster-General, the lion. F. Jones, had intended making an inspection, but had been prevented from doing so on account of weather conditions causing the abandonment of his coastal tour.
Mr. Semple said ho ■would convey his impressions to Mr. Jones, and say’ that Tikitiki was duo for a new post office.
