THIRD AIRMAN PRISONER
WENDEL’S NONCHALANCE CAPTIVE OF BASQUES BILBAO, May 13. The laconic quality of the German fighting man’s outlook was revealed when captors questioned a German air pilot, Joachim Wendel, who _was shot down at 1500 ft. when he was busy machine-gunning a Basque armoured car.
Wendel, after parachuting to earth, dusted his uniform, clicked his heels, saluted and said: “German troops aro the best in the world. Ido not think much of the Italians.”
He gave information, on which the Basques are protesting to the NonIntervention Committee, that Germany has broken the non-intervention agreement and the bail on recruiting for Spain. He took part in the operations against Guernica.
ISOLATION NECESSARY CAMP OF REFUGEES (Reed. May 28, noon) LONDON, May 27. The authorities have been compelled to isolate the Basque refugee children’s camp at North Stoneham, because people are inducing the children to escape and also exchanging their Spanish money at ridiculous rates.
