CARTER BEQUEST

SITU AT WELLINGTON

(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. After lengthy negotiations betweeh the Government and the interested parties finality is apparently likely to bo realised in the matter of the Carter bequest and Wellington will be tbo site of a now astronomical observatory. This is one of the chief items before the annual meeting of the council of the Royal Society of New Zealand to-day. The proposal provides for tho absorption of about half the £12,000 now available in buildings and equipment, to meet which the City Council will provide the site and a nine-inch telescope, while the Government and city together will be responsible for tho maintenance of the observatory. The balance of the fund will be held available for further development. Tho discussion of tho recommendation is in committee.
