VICTIM OF EXPLOSION

AERODROME ENGINEER

COMMENT BY CORONER (Per Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., this day. "From a report made by Hie Government analyst it seems quite clear that this lubricating oil drum contained some fraction of petroleum distillate which caused an explosion." commented the coroner, when at an inquest this morning into the death of Frederich Charles Norton, aged 53 years, a ground engineer of Union Airways, he returned a verdict that the. deceased was accidentally killed at Hie Milson aerodrome on May 3 through Hie explosion of an oildrum from which he was removing the top with an acetylene plant. The coroner added that no blame was attachable to the authorities of the, aerodrome. It would hfl as well, lie said, to "issue a warning to all handling these drums to see they were free from anything in tho nature of petroleum. The accident illustrated the danger of cutting open a drum which contained petrol or oil not of high flash point, crankcase drainings, likely to give off gas, For the removal of which it was necessary just to steam the drums and valves, said the coroner.
