MEETING OF COUNCIL LONG LIST OF BUSINESS .METALLING MATTERS (Special to tho Herald.) TE KARAKA, this clay. A longtliv list of correspondence was clea.it with' by the Waikohu County Council at its" monthly meeting to-day. The meeting was presided over by Cr. A. A. Fraser. chairman, and there were also present Crs. 11. 11. Dods, M. Doyle, C. Oaukrodger, H. C. Hoys, 11. -J. F. Tombleson and J. B. Williams.

Mr. 0. Korte, lion secretary of the Matawai Football Club, applied for permission to shift a road fence which was in dangerous proximity to the touch line on the Matawai football groundIt was decided to reply that the council could not give permission for an obstruction to be placed on a public road. Mi'. F. 11. .Maclean wrote asking that something be done immediately to improve the condition of the Motu front road near his property. —Tho matter was referred to the engineer for attention. Mr. M. Park wrote offering to pay his share towards the cost of forming an extra, 55 chains of the Makara road. Mr. J. McNeil advised that he was not prepared to make any contribution to this work. -The letters were received. Circulars were received from the. Counties' Association dealing with industrial awards and advising that the conference of the association would be held in Wellington on August 25. 26 and 27. -The circular was received. Noxious Weeds

In answer to a request from the council, tho Minister of Agriculture replied that he regretted that the subsidy on the wages of the noxious weeds inspector could not be extended beyond April 30. —Jt was resolved to continue the inspector's appointment from month to month until tho question, of subsidy was considered finally by the department. The Minister of Agriculture wrote stating that if the council's noxious weeds inspector found noxious w'eeds on unoccupied Crown land the fact should bo reported to the local officer of the Agricultural Department.—The council agreed to forward the information to the inspector. The Mayor of Auckland wrote thanking the council for its co-operation in raising funds for the King George V memorial fund.—The letter was received.

The manager of the Bank of New Zealand, Gisborne intimated that the overdraft limit aplied for by the. council had been granted.—The communication was received.

Replying to a request from the council, the clerk of the Opotiki County Council stated that it was not prepared to enter into an agreement for tho use of the services of the naxious weeds inspector. — The letter was received.

The chairman of the. Cook Hospital Board, Mr. M. T. Trafford. extended an invitation to members Of the council to visit the hospital buildings.—The invitation was acknowledged with thanks. In reply to an inquiry from the county clerk, the Secretary to the Treasury suggested that the term of the debentures unsold by the council might be shortened to make them more attractive to investors. —The. letter was received.

Kanakanaia Eoad Mr. A. G. Tlultquist, M.P.. forwarded a. copy of a. letter received from the Minister of Public Works regarding! the metalling of the upper end of the Kanakanaia road, and promising favourable consideration for an application for a subsidy on a basis of £2 for £1 when the estimates were under consideration.—Tile amount required was placed on the estimates.

A copy of a resolution was received from the Makara County Council proposing that the Local Bodies Amalgamation Bill Ik> amended to provide for the taking of a poll of the ratepayers before the legislation takes effect.—ft was resolved to support the proposal. Mr. W. M. Jenkins, town clerk, Gisborne, forwarded for completion a form of declaration and memorial in connection with the taking of additional land for the Gisborne aerodrome.—The forms were signed and sealed. Notice was received from Mr. A. <!. llultquist, M.P., that he had arranged for the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, to visit Te Karaka on Saturday, May 29, for about three; hours. —lt was decided to entertain the Ministerial party at the Rangatira Hotel for lunch. Mr. D. ('mill reminded the council of its promise to consider the metalling of his road when the estimates were under consideration.—The clerkwas instructed to inform .Mr. Craill of the council's intentions.

Mrs. W. ..McMillan wrote asking for an additional culvert on her road. — The engineer was instructed to see into the matter. Mr. .1. G. Malone gave notice that he desired to interview the Minister of Public Works at Te Karaka.—The notice was received. The district engineer, Mr. O. (I. Thornton,'wrote stating that the Minister of Public Works had approved a total subsidy of CIIHO, Sit for £l, for (lie construction of the Bangatira bridge.—The letter was received. Authority was received from the Public Works Department for the expenditure of £I6OO, for metalling on [he YVliarekopae-Tahorn road, on a subsidy basis of .!'.'> for £l,—The coininuniaction was received. The managing secretary of the Cook Hospital Board. Mr. C. A. Harries, gave notice of the board's intention to consider at a special meeting the question of obtaining consent to the raising of a loan of £35.500 for additional buildings and equipment, details of which were enclosed.—Considerable discussion ensued on the question. Cr. Tombleson gave an explanation of the need' for the additional expenditure and explained, in reply to Cr. Doyle, that, the board would raise the whole loan, but half the annual Charge would he met by Government subsidy. The* Public Works Department wrote asking for information regarding unmetallcd roads with a view to compiling a plan for metalling all unnietalled roads in the Dominion under a five-year scheme. The engineer said the information had been supplied.
