CLAIM TO NORTH POLE
RUSSIAN EXPEDITION “COMRADE STALIN FLOE” LONDON, May 23. The North Pole has been annexed by the Soviet, air expedition, headed by Or. Otto Schmidt, which intends to live for a year on an ice-floe near the North Pole to study the possibility of establishing a permanent polar landing base for the projected Alos-cow-San Francisco air route.
'l'he explorers christened the ice-floe on which they landed, 12A miles from the North Pole, 121 miles from the Rudolf Island meridian, “Comrade Stalin."
Already the party is transmitting four weather bulletins daily to Aloscow.
The scientists will live .in an aluminium house lift, by 7ft., the floor of which is rubber. The windows are made of unbreakable glass. The explorers’ clothing includes a complete covering of .merino wool, pure silk underwear, flannel-lined breeches and shirts, reindeer fur suits, and fleece overcoats lined with foxskin.
'Phe Soviet Government’s best chefs and dietitians worked for months to produce typical Russian delicacies in tablet form, including borsch soup, “Arctic biscuit,” comprising chicken, l>eef and flour.
A year’s food supply will be con tabled in 7f> tin boxes.
