NEW PLYMONTH, last, ni^ht. “It is very unusual to (jive probation for sheep or cattle stealing, because they are insidious offences that arc hard to sheet home/’ said Mr, Justice Ostler in the .Supreme Court, ivlien admitting Herbert Isaac Elliot, farm manager, of Mahoonui, to probation for two years for the theft of cattle from a neighbour. “For that reason, T do not think I have previously given probation for this offence,” added His Honour,” but; your neighbours, the men whose cattle you stoic, have come forward to speak for you.” The condition was that Elliot should take out a prohibition order for two years and pay the costs of the prosecution.
