SHEEP DOG TRIALS

EVENTS AT RUATORIA ZIG-ZAG HTJNTAWAY WIN BY MR. McCAFFERY’S TWEED

Commenting, on Hie third class, the zig-zag huntnwny, at, the Poverty Hay sheep dog championships conducted at Rmitoria last week in conjunction with the Wniapu Sheep DogTrial Club’s annual field meet, the judge, Mr. Quentin Williams, stated that although no outstanding inn.? were seen the work was good and get -

erallv of a much higher standard man in the leading events. He considered that the work was well up to the Poverty' Bay lnmtaway standard. Mr. Williams considered that the course lacked length and steepnes? lor a solid hunt a way to show - his best work, as the finishing times indicated. The sheep used for the trials had been" loaned by Pakihiron station, and Mr. Williams stated that they were tonal to the best he had ever seel at any trial for evenness and working- qualities.

The judge commented as follows on the placed dogs:— F, McCaffery’s Tweed hunted throughout on a good line until tno top set of flags, where he got off Hie line, a little to the left. He was inclined to use a good amount of noise downhill.

W. McKenzie’s Tim made a rash start and went slightly' off the line after the first set of’ hurdles. He straightened up on the second sot well and on through the centre ol the third, finishing in "min 2lisec. The doghunted throughout in “a slap-and-go” manner, with much spinning round. W. McKenzie’s Nigger started on a good line, but got above the sheep after the first set of hurdles and drove the sheep off the line to the let 4 '. He recovered and finished well in 3miu Osec. Nigger is inclined to be slack, and old age is smarting to take effect on his bark and pace. P. Tibbie’s Darkie missed tlm first set of hurdles, but recovered well and hunted on a good line to near the lop, where lie got slightly to the left, but finished well. The dog made a good noise, though he rather lacked stylo. Winners of Cups The following cups have been presented as the results of the trials: Senior Cup. presented by Mr. P. 5. Burton, L. MoCaffery, 109 points. Run-ner-up, presented by Duco Company: M. McNeil, 105 points. Maori Cup, presented by Messrs. A. J. H. lvirkham and McCosh. —A. Pipi, 115 j, points. Best all round dog.—J. Morrissey s Dow. Runner-up: A. McCosh’s Dick. Noisiest unplaced hnntnway. —A. l’ipi's Way. Fastest time in Long Head.—C. .1. Hyland. Time. lmin. 21 see.

Smoke Concert The annual dog trial smoke concert was held on Friday and proved a most enjoyable evening. About 35 guests were present. The billowing toasts were proposed: "The King"; "Kindred I lulls." proposed hv Mr. I). Bruce and replied to by Mr. C. OTtcgan: "The fudge.” proposed by Mr. J, Morrissy and replied to by Mr. (j. Williams; "The Ladies,” proposed by Mr. I>. Sherrill' and replied to by Mr. W. Gray; "The Visitors,” proposed by Mr. S. McCosh and replied to by Air. W. •’Reg,an ; “Donors of Specials,” promised by Air. L. MrCall'erv and replied to by Air. D. Kirkham ; “Ground and Sheep.” proposed by Mr. 11. Boyce and replied to by Air. M. O’Sullivan; “The President.” replied to by Air. O. K. Williams; “The Secretary.” replied to by Air. G. Cotlerill. Old favourites were played by Air. lion. Robb and sung by all present, and each item was led by Air. J. Alorrissey. Several enjoyable items were given by the valley Quartet. Messrs. .1. Alorrissey. O. Rawlings. Al. White and R. Rawlings. A much appreciated solo was given by Air. J. Morrissey. All those present stood in silence out of respect for the late Air. J. AL Reedy, Mrs. O. Griffiths. Messrs. W. Waitili ■ind 11. Kershaw. Mr. K. I’cedy gave a solo and was much encored. The singing of “Auld Lang Syne” and “God Save the King” brought a very enjoyable livening to a conclusion.
