DAVIS CUP CLASH

U.S.A. AND AUSTRALIA NEXT SATURDAY’S GAMES Tlio Davis Cup, tennis match between Australia and the United States of Ain erica is to be played at Forest Hills, commencing next Saturday. It is fortunate for Australia that McGrath has recovered from his throat trouble anil will now be able to pny. The necessity for a substitution has therefore been obviated.

To have played Bromwich would have been an experiment, as he has not. had sufficient experience. Without McGrath, therefore, Crawford would probably have to play m both singles and doubles. Crawford is still great, and would have been quite capable of winning at least one single. The American team is Budge, Grant, Parker, and Malco. Budge and Grant will probably plav the singles, while the doubles pair is expected to be Budge and Mako.

That Australia was depending on McGrath is quite evident from recent remarks of J. 'Crawford, when lie said: “McGrath’s present form is equal to that which won him matches against Vines, Perry, Wood and other great internationals. If he can hold his form, and I have no doubt he will, Australia’s chances in the Davis Cup are particularly bright. Although he has not yet met I am confident his style of play is more than likely to upset the American.”

CUP PROSPECTS OVERSEAS OPINIONS If American experts are to be taken as tho last word, Great Britain has finished with the Davis Cup for a season or so. Eighteen of them have decided that the United States will regain the cup; 16 of them think it will go to Germany; and 10 favour Australia. Only three of them give Britain the faintest semblance of a chance. Well, the majority, may be all wrong. Ido not think it beyond possibility that 11. W. Austin will win both of his singles matches — whether lie meets Australians or Americans.

’Then S. E. Hare and F. li. D. Wilde may be our doubles pair, and they are improving vastly. [t would be a shock for all other countries if, Britain, without Percy, proved invincible—but it is not a dream —Geoffrey Simpson in the Daily Mail.
