WAIROA NEWS

(Herald Correspondent.) The. schools of the Wniroa County reopened on Monday after a shortened term holiday. Empire Day in Wniroa was marked yesterday by a, display of hunting at the post office and on a few of the other buildings. The m.v. Koau, which was to have sailed from Wniroa on Friday for Napier with :t small consignment of frozen meat, did not load and is still hsrhouiul. At the Wniroa Power Board's annual meeting yesterday the chairman, Mr. C. y. Chamberlain, stated that during the year the necessary Order-in-Council was issued authorising the hoard to raise an additional £SOOO for extension purposes, and steps would he taken to borrow that amount. The loan account was in debit to the power fund account to the extent- of £638. Mr. J. Corkill said that, when the Wairoa Borough Council paid up what the hoard claimed as its due, the Power Board would be in a. good way. The monthly report of the Wairoa Power Board’s engineer, adopted at yesterday's meeting, mainly dealt with renovations and restorations of faults, but recorded a large number of new connections and extensions. It is considered hy some residents that if the Public Works Department would place Wairoa- on a par with the cities as regards price, the district would take up 100 per cent more power. A commencement was made at the Wairoa freezing works on Saturday by Messrs. Swifts (N.Z.), Limited, with the killing of turkeys for the Home market, about SCO being dealt with. The birds came mostly from the Awamate ‘district, and they were all in fine condition, but there must ho many more in other parts of the county, and the total for the season is likely to reach a respectable ligure, though it is intended to hold over a certain number of birds for the London Christmas trade, a period when still better prices may be expected. It has been arranged that the Alabin Hunt Club’s point-to-point meeting will he. held on July 14, with a programme similar to that carried out last year, which proved very popular. The Hunt, Club Ball is to be held on June 11 in the Gaiety Theatre, Wairoa. T hose who attended at the meeting to arrange this popular social affair were Mcsdames G. O. K. Sainsbury, J. Powdrell and T. \V, G. Tombleson; Misses M. and P. Brownlie, J. and N. Nolan, and R. Sainsbury; Messrs. Kahn Stewart, A. Hick ling*, R,. J. Goldstone, and the club secretary, Mr. A. 11. IT. Unwin. A pleasant dance was held at Raupirnga redciilly, the organisers, Mr. lvighy, '-hon. Secretary, and Air. D. Nathan, acting as AT.G.s. The recent rains have been greatly appreciated hy farmers and gardeners, but, a good deal more is needed as the ground is still very hunt. The frosts nave been light, and they have not affected the pastures. Stock prices should harden a little with the prospect of good pastures for the winter. Alias M. Perkins, Marino parade, lias returned from a holiday spent in iiie Auckland district.—Mr.' It. Ale In tyro and .Master David .Mclntyre loft on Saturday for Hastings, where the former’s daughter, Helen, had to undergo an operation in a Hastings hospital.-•• Mrs. Bygum, Queen street, has returned front a. visit to her daughter in .lolinsonville. —Leave ol absence was granted at the Wairoa Power Board meeting yesterday to Mr J.
