FIXED PETROL PRICES
DAIEY CO. EXEMPTION
RESELLERS' APPEAL
Support for the efforts of legitimate petrol resellers in urging on tiio Government the unfairness of certain exemptions from the price lixat ion" regulations, and seeking the inclusion of dairy companies under these regulations, was given by the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, after considering a recommendation from the executive.
The ability of dairy companies to sell petrol at any price was detrimental to the business of legitimate resellers, according to a letter from the Auckland Petrol Resellers Association. It was suggested that dairy companies should bo subject to the price fixing regulations, and that any profits thus accrued should be distributed among shareholders.
"All chambers should let it bo known that they intend to combat. the idea of price fixation, and that that have no sympathy with it at all," said Mr. .). Hislop. "It is a vicious system —another guaranteed price proposition.. The whole principle is a very bud one for trade, and it should be condemned."
Unrestricted competition was .just as vicious a system as price fixation, said Mr. J. A. 0. Alluin. lie contended that if! price fixation were established it should apply to all sections of traders, among whom there should bo fair play. Mr. Gainor Jackson said that, as the Government had instituted price fixation on the sale of petrol in certain districts, it should ensure that the scheme was made general to all resellers, including dairy companies. The executive's recommendation to support the Petrol Resellers' Association was adopted.
