; STATEMENT BY COMPANIES HIGHER COSTS OVERSEAS The following comments on the new petrol prices were issued in Christchurch iby Mr. V. 11. Smith, general manager ! of the Shell Company of New Zealand. I Limited, and Mr. J. 11. Liudou, general ; manager of the Vacuum Oil Company, as representatives of the oil companies : “On December 12, 1936, prices ol ’ motor spirit were increased one penny a gallon in llmse parts of New Zea ! land not subject to price control. At the same time application was made to the i Minister of Industries and Commerce , for an increase of one penny a gallon j in the controlled areas. The December increase was dictated by increases in i the price of motor spirit at the source land in the cost of ocean freights, j “The Department of Industries and ' Commerce undertook a careful investi- ! Ration into all these factors in price and has now agreed that prices may I he increased in the controlled areas to bring them into line with prices already established elsewhere since December 12. I Similar increases in -the price of motor | spirit have taken place in England and Australia and, in fact, throughout the . world.”
