CHURCHES WARNED
“SUPPORT OF LABOUR" DOMINION TENDENCIES Regret that at Ihe last election there had been a tendency for some of the churches to become associated with the Labour Party was expressed by the leader of the National Party, the lion. A. Hamilton, in an address in Christ church. Mr. Hamilton said lie was a member of a church, and he knew thill many church people thought that the last Uov eminent had been too hard. *j bey believed in social service, and thought that more could be done if the Labour Party wore returned.
There was a tendency among Labour supporters to connect up socialism and social service, but the two did not go logoi, her. He thought the church people should watch where they were going, as there was a tendency for the churches to become too closely associated with organised and official Labour. Mr. Hamilton quoted an eminent authority as saying that the church had three main enemies. The 'fu st was Ihe indilI'erence of its own people, the second was people of the al.lieisl type, and the third was the totalitarian Slate. "We are. heading fast towards the totalitarian State.” he added. “Thai means when the Stale takes charge nl everything, and the lirst clash that usually coined is between the Stale and I lie elnireh. S°me people are very anxious afoul it, and if we have an overthrow from our presold system it will be of the tjmnmmist type. That is not so far a wav."
