HAMILTON KEEPING HILL

POLL OF RATEPAYERS

CIVIC PLAN REJECTED

(Tor Press Association.)

HAMILTON, this day. Lively interest .was taken in a poll of ratepayers concerning the removal of Garden Place Hill in Hamilton and after a record poll last evening the council's scheme to remove the hill was beaten by 213 votes.

The council planned to raise a loan of £89,000 to remove the hill, which is in the centre of the town, and lay out a civic square and make business sections available. Tho council estimated that the return would be over £90,000 with additional benefits and rates and rents. Feeling was running high over the past week and more than twice as many people voted as voted for the last loan for a waterworks scheme in 1928.

The figures were 1171 for the proposal and 1384, against it. while 31 were informal.
