AUCKLANDERS’ VISIT

PROMINENT SWIMMERS

CARNIVAL ON SATURDAY

At a meeting of the executive of the Gisborne Surf and Swimming Club, held last evening, the principal attention was given to arrangements for the carnival organised in connection with the visit to Gisborne of a team of fivo Auckland swimmers next Saturday. Those present at the meeting were Mrs. J. Ileenoy, Miss H. McKnight, and Messrs. E. T. Chrisp, chairman, It. I’’. Forster, 11. Green, A. Knights, F. Ellis, It. Ilerge, 0. Rigby, C. E.' Brown, S. 'McKenzie, T. \Vnucliop, and R. (Tederwnll, lion, secretary.

Prior to the discussion of )nisi 11 ess, the chairman offered a welcome to Mr. A. Knights, late of Iho St. Clair club, Dunedin, who was appointed to the committee to replace Mr. fi. Robbie, the latler being under notice of transfer to Christchurch.

It was reported that the Auckland swimmers would arrive in Gisborne on Friday evening, the team comprising Miss Barbara Lewen, Auckland backstroke champion and second fastest woman swimmer in Auckland, freestyle; It. Frankham, holder of the New Zealand record for lOOvds.; P. .Hannan, who defeated Frankham at the Auckland championships in the 50yds., 100yds., and 220yds. races; W. Johnstone, Auckland’s mile champion ami a useful middle-distance swimmer; and Brian O’Connor, considered to be the third fastest swimmer in the northern city.

Reports were received regarding billeting and entertainment of tho visitors, and it was agreed that the Mayor, Mr. J). \V. Coleman, ALP., who is also patron of the club, should be asked to extend ,a welcome to the visitors at the baths on tho night of the carnival. The secretary was instructed to invite the co-operation of the W.E.C.M.R'. (City) Band in making the function successful.

Programme events for the carnival will include the following:—22oyds. short-limit handicap, 100yds. shortlimit handicap, 50yds. open handicap, 100yds. back-stroke handicap, dual relay race, 50yds. schoolgirls’ race, 150yds. schoolboys’ race, 100yds. intermediate hoys’ handicap, (50 2-3yds. ladies’ handicap, ladies’ dive, open dive, lOOvds. relay handicap, and exhibition of strokes by visiting competitors, in addition to a display of water-polo.
