HITLER REGIME
people against war GERMANS OONTENTED Private persons with whom he spoke during it recent visir to Germany told .Mr. F. ,|. T. Grigg, Government amilyist for Canterbury and Westland, that they very definitely did not want war. and, in fact, were generally much opposed to it. .Mr, "Grigg returned recently front a visit, which took hint to Great Britain, Belgium, Germany and France, and in private discussions, mostly with professional men. he secured many interesting impressions of conditions in those, countries. His mission was to study branches ol science with which his work is associated.
Mr. Grigg said in an interview in Christchurch, that in .Germany he found a very orderly country, with cleanliness noticeable everywhere, with fine, modern buildings, and particularly good roads. Outwardly, at least, the people appeared to be fairly contented, and the views he was able to secure indicated that outwardly the people were favourably inclined to the Hiller regime. These people justified Hitler’s policy on the grounds that he provided the country with it settled Government. That was something Germany had not had for many years, the people claimed. TOURISTS WELCOMED Mr. Grigg was impressed at the lengths official quarters go in Germany to make a tourist’s stay there pleasant. Every courtesy is shown visitors, and those planning a stav longer than seven days secure advantages such as reduced fares and concessions in the currency. Every inducement was ofi’ered visitors to secure- a good impression of the country. Mr. Grigg saw little evidence of any great rearmament activity in Germany hut in the south, particularly, uniforms were fairly much in evidence. He gained one striking impression of industrial Germany and the lengths to which industry lias gone there in applied science
—that was when he was told of tote organisation, a co-opera I ion of production groups interested in the manulaelure of such things its dyestuffs and drugs, which employs I'H.OCO people and has between 6CCO and TOCO scientists on its staffs.
